A Rights Respecting School enables children to learn about their rights. Article 12 states that every child has a right to have their voice heard. Using the Lundy model, where children have space, voice, audience and influence, they feel empowered to share their authentic voice, and play an active part in decisions that are made that affect them, their school, community and beyond.
Rights Respecting Schools give children a voice, to take action on things that really matter to them. Through campaigning and advocacy they begin to realise that they can make a difference. This empowerment enables them to realise that they can use their voice to begin to change their world and make it a fairer, more socially just place to be, for all young people. I have the experience and expertise to support schools in developing real and authentic advocacy across the curriculum.
As a Headteacher, I led a Gold Rights Resecting School where the students achieved remarkable things. Now a Children's Rights School Adviser, I support primary, secondary, PRUs and virtual schools on their Rights Respecting journey. I am a Silver Assessor for the UNICEF School Rights Awards. In June 2024 I spoke at the Dorset Educational Conference on Children's Rights. .
